Katie Coppens

Katie Coppens is a middle school science teacher who writes both fiction and non-fiction books for children. Katie's chapter book series The Acadia Files (Tilbury House) is set over four seasons and teaches science through the curiosity of fictional 5th grader Acadia Greene. She also has a two book series, Geology is a Piece of Cake and Geometry is as Easy as Pie (Tumblehome Learning), that uses cooking to teach science and math. She co-authored What Do Black Holes Eat For Dinner? And Other Silly, Yet Totally Smart, Questions About Space (Tumblehome Learning) with Dr. Grant Tremblay. Her newest book EARTH WILL SURVIVE, but we may not (Tumblehome Learning) won the Ben Franklin Award (gold) for teen nonfiction, Nautilus Award (gold) for Young Adult non-fiction and the IPPY Award (silver) for Young Adult non-fiction. Katie was a finalist for the 2020, 2021, and 2022 Maine Literary Award for young people's literature. From 2018 to present, Katie has written a column for NSTA's Science Scope magazine on strategies to integrate science and literacy and is the author of NSTA's Creative Writing in Science: Activities that Inspire.
