Jean Leibowitz Wiecha

Jean Leibowitz Wiecha is an artist and writer in Portland. Her book, Discover Her Art: Women Artists and Their Masterpieces (2022, Chicago Review Press), explores the art of painting and the role of women in art history through 24 masterworks by women. Jean’s own art focuses on industrial landscapes, the Maine coast, and portraiture. She is currently represented by Elizabeth Moss Galleries (Falmouth and Portland), and previously has shown at Casco Bay Artisans (Portland) and Gallery 55 (Natick, MA). She won the 2007 Daniel Smith award, besting 35,000 international competitors, for her painting of the defunct Stinson’s cannery in Belfast, ME. Jean was an experienced, highly published academic writer before retiring from public health in 2020.  For over 30 years, she collaborated with school systems and national not for profit organizations to develop and scale effective nutrition and physical activity programs for kids. Jean holds a doctorate in nutrition from Tufts University. Her working principles are to be curious, ask lots of questions, and experiment with solutions-- on the canvas, on the page, and in science.
