Jean M. Flahive

After a long career in higher education, Jean Flahive rediscovered her childhood passion for writing, and enjoys shedding light on lesser known pieces of Maine history. Her children’s book, The Old Mainer and the Sea, is based on a dory fisherman from Chebeague Island.

Jean is also the author of two historical fictions, Billy Boy, the Sunday Soldier of the 17th Maine and Railroad to the Moon, Elijah’s Story, and co-author of two previous children’s picture books, Remember Me, Tomah Joseph’s Gift to Franklin Roosevelt, which won a 2009 Moonbeam Gold Award, and The Galloping Horses of Willowbrook, which was a finalist in the 2012 Maine Literary Awards.

Jean’s most recent books include a young adult historical fiction, Teddy Roosevelt, Millie, and the Elegant Ride, which won a Eric Hoffer Gold Medal in 2020 as well as a Moonbeam Bronze Award, and The Canoe Maker, David Moses Bridges, Passamaquoddy Birch Bark Artisan, which was a 2019 Maine Literary Award finalist.
